I know that's probably not that much help if you do need to keep the database. We don't have any compliance issues we have to worry about so didn't need to keep any long-standing records. I work for a small-ish construction supply company, so losing the database wasn't all that big of a deal. I'm sure, given more time, he probably could have found a workaround at some point, but I finally just opted to blow the entire installation away and start over. I spent quite a bit of time with one of their engineers on a remote session only to have him basically tell me at the end that the update was showing as done, but some sub-system wasn't convinced of that fact and wouldn't release the rest of the system for normal operation.

Unfortunately, my solution was to download the newest VHD of the appliance, install that into the VM, and configure from scratch again. Did you ever find a resolution? I have the same issue.
